6 - 12 Jan 2019
Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre
Sydney, Australia

Like the Brisbane International, the Sydney International is one of the lead-up tournaments to the big gig - the Australian Open. But by comparison, it's quite small and intimate, and lacks the suffocating crowds the Australian Open can have. This allows fans to get close to their tennis heroes. Nice.

That Sinking Feeling

Ever feel like this ball? Ever have that sinking feeling you were plunging headlong into the racquet of life at some ridiculous rate of knots seemingly out of control? The impact, the strain, the stress, the pain. We all go through those emotions. They’re very real. BUT… the ball will not sink ad infinitum. And it won’t sink for long. It’s about to be relaunched and returned with interest. It’s actually the sinking that is the very mechanism that catapults the ball even faster & further, maybe more than ever before. So if you feel like you’re sinking you may just be on the cusp of the rush. Hold on!

New kid on the block Frances Tiafoe plays a scintillating backhand against Aussie John Millman in an entertaining match. The Aussie dug deep in the Aussie heat and came back in three - 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Matt Ebden & Robert Lindstedt

I should probably let you caption the above photo yourself because if I was to do it then I'd likely write something crazy, possibly a little too crazy, such as...

"Sorry for losing the point. On a positive note though, I think I might have just laid an egg."

So it's probably best if I leave it up to you :)

Close Call / Double Exposure

As close calls go, this was pretty much as close as it gets. Stefanos Tsitsipas very narrowly avoided being smashed in the face by a cannoning tennis ball fired his way by Guido Andreozzi on Ken Rosewall Arena. It was a very fierce - but fair - body serve! And in proceeding photo notice how squashed the tennis ball on the racquet is. That could have been on Stefanos’ face! Ouch!

The show must go Hon

Aussie Priscilla Hon went out fighting against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Hopefully she'll have a great 2019.

Double the effort. Don't you just hate it when a linesperson's hat encroaches on a good photo?

“Yours!” “Mine!” “OURS!”
