2019 Australian
Open
14 – 28 Jan 2019
Melbourne Park
Melbourne, Australia
The Australian Open - The Happy Slam -
is one of the world's premier sporting events, being the
first of the four tennis Grand Slams held throughout the
year. If you haven't been I recommend you do so, especially
during the first couple of days of competition when all 256
of the world's top tennis players
play. So good! |
Bulging
Ball!
A tennis ball bulges
through Maria Shakkari's racquet during a match at the 2019
Australian Open. Very cool!

Andy Murray's Last Hurrah?
England's Andy Murray
possibly said "Goodbye" to professional tennis on
the first night of
the 2019 Australian Open. Although Andy kept rising to the
occasion, he finally fell to Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut
in an epic 5-set match.

Oh Roberto!
Spain's Roberto
Bautista Agut put an end to Andy Murray's year & possibly
career
in a desperate 5-set match.

Rafa Will Return
He was valiant in
defeat, but Spain's Rafael Nadal wasn't able to match Novak
Djokovic in the 2019 Australian Open Men's Final. He may not
have gone home the champion but I know for a fact, he will
be back!

Flying & Sliding
Stefanos Tsitsipas
knows how to fly. And he knows how to slide. And he knows
how to win, defeating Matteo Berrettini, Viktor Troicki,
Nikoloz Basilashvili, Roger Federer & Roberto Bautista Agut
on his way to becoming the first Greek tennis player ever to
play in a Grand Slam semi-final. Pity for him he came up
against a rampaging Rafa! Oh well, but well done!

The Back
Of A Warrior
The back of the warrior
shows the strain but not the pain of a first round loss. Not
this time, Bernarda Pera, not for lack of trying.

Plíšková & Out
It’s always sad to see
one of your favourite players bow out of a big tournament.
But they all do it. One by one. All but one. So
disappointment is a monster that looms around the corner for
every player - every player that feels they could have done
more, tried harder, gone further. What if? What if? What if?
Sports can be a never-ending cycle of disappointment. Next
time. Next time. Next time. It makes the elation of winning
even more intense - not only for the ultimate achievement of
winning but for the averted disappointment of losing. And
that disappointment can be crushing! I hope Karolína
Plíšková isn’t
too disappointed with her Australian Open campaign. She
played some incredible tennis and pulled off one of the
greatest upset comebacks in tennis history against Serena
Williams. All the best, Karolína - and everyone else - for
your next tournaments. May the court rise up to meet you.

Tennis Ball Feels
Who'd wanna be a tennis
ball? Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber smashes the living
daylights out of a hapless and helpless tennis ball. Not
that I’d want to be one anyway. But still...
