I was at the 2018 Australian Open as photographer for Nick Kyrgios and his charity NK Foundation (click for more). These shots appear on Nick's social media accounts, especially Facebook.

Plus I took a few other photos while I was there.

Kerber Crunch

First Prize: Monochrome Print
2018 Royal Queensland Show

Chosen as 1 of 10 photos to represent Queensland at APSCON 2018

Germany's Angelique Kerber crunches a ball mid-flight during her epic 2hr 20min Semi-final showdown with Romania’s Simona Halep at 2018 Australian Open, eventually going down 9-7 in a marathon third set.

It was easily one of the best matches I've ever seen. It was exhausting & heart-thumping. I was worn out just watching it! Both had match points, both scrambled as if their lives depended on it, both at stages looked as if they were so exhausted they couldn't go on, both kept lifting time & time again. It was awesome to be there and even more awesome to get some cool action shots as souvenirs. Thanks ladies, you’re both unbelievably unbelievable!

Although Angie took out the championship in 2016, this year wasn't to be. 2018 Australian Open Women's Singles Semi-final, Thursday 25 January 2018, Rod Laver Arena.

Nick Kyrgios - Round 2

Nick Kyrgios defeated Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(2) in the 2018 Australian Open Men's Singles 2nd Round, Wednesday 17 January 2018, Hisense Arena. Match time: 2h 12m.

Nick served 17 aces, hit 38 winners & his fastest serve was 216km/h. And his 'signing' game was on fire - actually I don't know if any other player signs more autographs after a match than Nick does. Good work.

Signing Session

Each of Nick's practice sessions also included meeting and inspiring very ill children from Camp Quality (more photos here), followed by signing autographs and posing for selfies. Most other high profile players don't spend anywhere near the amount of time Nick does signing & greeting fans. In fact many of them refuse to do it at all. 17 Jan 2018.

Bending Strings Into Winning Things

Strings flex under the stress of impact as World Number One Simona Halep returns a ball with interest to Angie Kerber on her way to winning the second of the Women’s Singles Semifinals at this year’s Australian Open.

I like seeing the ball on the racquet, squishing under pressure. It's even better seeing the strings bending. Nice.

Red Rocket

The speed of World Number One Simona Halep on the court is awesome to behold. She’s hungry, determined & spring-loaded as she launches herself in a bid to win one more point. I’m sure she must have rockets in her pockets! She never gives up, never lets up. And to back that up, this photo was taken right on the two hour mark!

The epic 2018 Australian Open Women’s Singles Semifinal against Germany’s Angie Kerber was an exhaustive and heart-thumping match to watch - so much going on, so many shots, so much running, especially that 16 game third set. Can tennis get any better?

And thanks, Simona, for the towel.
